Rugar is Johannes Burstrom from Sweden. He started doing tracker music in the late 90's, followed by an ascetic exploration of the 2a03 sounds. That came out as the album My Girl, the Princess, which was released by 8bitpeoples in 2002. He has also made music for a TV documentary about pests, a score which mixed a traditional tracker sound with bombastic orchestral explosions. Johannes is also working as an improvising bassist and computer musician. The music of Rugar has a distinct melodious style, which of course draws influences from early video game music, but also from tango, baroque music and easy listening. It's all about the vain attempt to squeeze as much emotion out of those square waves as humanly possible. Maybe it won't make you dance, but it's sure gonna make you cry.
